James Maclean to step down, with Kevin Kirkland becoming CEO
Land + Water has announced important leadership changes, with James Maclean stepping down as CEO and Kevin Kirkland, currently acting as Chief Executive Designate, gradually taking on the role. After 36 years of building the business and more than 10 years as CEO, James Maclean feels now is the right time to step back and support a new CEO in guiding the Group forward as the company enters a new growth phase.
Kevin Kirkland has been with Land + Water for nearly 10 years, leading the Services division for the past five, and has consistently demonstrated the leadership, capability, integrity, and strategic vision required for this next phase. He’s played a key role in strengthening operations, managing complex projects, developing Land + Water’s people, and shaping the Group’s strategic direction.
Kevin and James have begun a structured transition of CEO responsibilities. During this period, James will remain CEO while gradually transferring responsibilities, knowledge, relationships, and experience to Kevin. This process aims to ensure smooth continuity for our people, customers, and stakeholders.
The transition is expected to take about six months, with Kevin formally becoming CEO in April 2027. Once complete, James will move to a new role as Futures Director, focusing on emerging markets, strategic opportunities, and supporting Kevin in shaping the Group’s long-term vision.
As Kevin moves into the CEO role, we will also begin recruiting a new Managing Director for Land + Water Services. Kevin and his team will continue to lead Services until we make a new appointment.
Despite these leadership changes, Land + Water’s purpose, values, and ambitions remain the same. Business will continue as usual; we’ll continue delivering exceptional projects for our clients and pursuing sustainable, long-term growth – always staying true to the culture that has earned Land + Water its respected reputation.
